Memorable Goals
The
United States were really struggling with their arch-rivals
Mexico, having failed to beat them in the last 7 encounters prior to a group stage meeting in
Gold Cup I. The teams met on the final matchday, both having 3 points and with
Panama on 6, so there was only one spot left in the knockout round between the two of them. Basically, the winner of the game would advance, but Mexico had the advantage on goal difference, so they would advance with a draw. The match went back and forth as
G. Franco and
Dempsey each scored a brace to make it 2-2 (USA had trailed 0-1 and then lead 2-1). To make matters worse
Clark had been sent off for collecting two yellow cards, so USA were down a man too.
The match entered stoppage time with the score still deadlocked and Mexico set to advance. After a long period of stoppage time, USA were literally on their last attack of the match. Dempsey had just lost possession, but
Masteroeni was there to stop the Mexican player from clearing it and instead poked it past him.
C. Davies lunged at the ball, just at the top of the box, to poke it ahead to Casey who had just slipped in behind the Mexican defense. He took a touch and then fired it into the upper left corner of the goal, beating the Mexican keeper and winning the match for the United States! The goal secured advancement to the knockout round and eliminated Mexico in the process, while also ending Mexico's 7-match unbeaten streak against the USA!
