Introduction
This was the third edition of the Asian Cup. There were a total of 20 teams who took part in the competition; all twenty teams who participated in Asian Cup II qualifying returned for this tournament. The format remained the same.- Teams Entered: 20

Qualification
The twenty teams were broken up into four groups of five. Qualification was straight forward, the top 2 teams in each groups would qualify.Seeding
The draw for the groups was seeded. Seeding was based on each nation's performance in the previous World Cups and Asian Cups, with more emphasis on Asian Cups. The four top seeds were teams who had played in both previous Asian Cups and who had won medals in those tournaments. Unintentionally, all four semifinalists from the previous tournament ended up being a top seed.The next Pot was the next four best teams as determined by having won a previous championship (Bahrain), having reached the semifinals (China), having qualified to both Asian Cups but not advancing past the group stage (Qatar) and having the most World Cup success albeit not as an Asian nation (Georgia). Pot C then contained all other teams who had previously qualified to an Asian Cup, and then Pot D contained all teams who have never qualified. Since there was one extra Pot C team, there would have to be one qualifying group with two teams from Pot C, while each other group would only have one. Conversely, that group would only have one Pot D team, while all others would have two.

Pot B: Bahrain, China, Qatar, Georgia
Pot C: Iran, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Oman, New Zealand
Pot D: Indonesia, Iraq, Kuwait, North Korea, Syria, Thailand, United Arab Emirates
