Introduction
Rio de Janeiro is a state in
Brazil. It formed its own national team following
Copa America I. Some of the reasons for the split included the excessive number of Brazilian players, enough to play on this team without needing to create anyone else and also to boost
CONMEBOL membership, since ten teams was not ideal. Together, with
Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro boosted CONMEBOL to 12 teams.

Challenge League Season 1
Rio de Janeiro's were drawn into the #9 position on Team 1, which featured
Netherlands,
Senegal,
South Korea,
Ireland,
Bulgaria,
Congo DR,
Bolivia, and
Qatar. It looked like Rio was going to climb the roster and challenge for the top spots in the group, as they had already reached the #6 position by Week 2. However, the team fell back to #7 the following week and then never managed to get back up to #6 for the rest of the season.
They eventually wound up clinching the #8 position and finished the season unbeaten in league play with a record of 7 wins and 3 draws, including a record of 5 wins and 1 draw at the #8 position. This unbeaten record helped Team 1 win the league championship with a record of 8 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw.
Their individual record was good enough to earn them the 4th seed in the post season tournament, which meant a BYE into the quarterfinals. In that tournament they managed to defeat 12th seeded
Latvia, who had upset 5th seed
South Africa in the previous round, and then they beat 8th seed
Saudi Arabia, who had upset 1st seed
Estonia, in the semifinals. They then defeated 11th seed
Lithuania to win the positional championship.
Since Team 1 had won the league, Rio also qualified to the individual tournament, and they were the only #8 team to qualify. As the 40th seed out of 40 teams, they faced 25th seed
Guinea in the first round. Guinea won that match 3-2 to eliminate Rio.
