[Stub]Burst onto Scene
Togo did not enter the first three World Cups, but once they finally got a team put together to start entering tournaments, they made an immediate impact. Lead by their star striker
Adebayor, Togo qualified to three straight World Cups and advanced to the knockout round twice. In their first campaign, for
World Cup IV, Togo won their inaugural game 1-0 over
Guinea and then managed to finish second behind
Nigeria, ahead of Guinea as well as
Senegal and
Mali. Drawn into Group C, Togo struggled early with a scoreless tie against
Belgium and then a 1-0 loss to
Bulgaria. Things turned around in the final match against
Mexico as Togo scored their first World Cup goal, courtesy of
Mamam Toure and then won 2-1 after Adebayor scored the winner. They were knocked out in the Round of Sixteen by
Colombia on penalty kicks after the game had ended 0-0.
For the
next World Cup, Togo once again finished runners up in their group, one point behind
Angola but ahead of both
South Africa and
Cameroon, which was good enough to qualify. Togo split all of their games yet again, losing to
Chile, drawing
Portugal, and then beating
South Korea. However, this time 4 points was not enough and they were eliminated.
Senegal topped the qualification group for
World Cup VI, but once again Togo was right there to qualify as second place, beating out all of
Mozambique,
Nigeria,
Mali, and
Cape Verde Islands. Group A proved to be very interesting, albeit dull. Five of the six matches ended in draws, four of which were scoreless.
Romania beat
Suriname for the only result of the group, which put them on top and left Suriname on the bottom. All three of Togo's games were draws, the same as
Austria. Since both teams had tied each other, 1-1, and both had played two scoreless draws against Romania and Suriname, there was no possible tiebreaker to use to decide who would advance to the knockout round. A penalty shootout was held, in which Togo defeated Austria 5-4 after 7 kicks apiece.
In the knockout round, Togo came up against
Chile, who had beaten them in the group stage of the previous World Cup. This time around, keeping up with the theme they had created, Togo played out a 0-0 draw and then managed to win 3-2 on penalties to advance to the quarterfinals, the furthest they had ever gotten. In this round they met
Senegal, the team they had battled with in qualifying. Senegal had finished top of the group with 23 points while Togo were second with 19, and also had an edge in the qualification series, winning 2-1 in the opening game and then holding Togo to a 2-2 draw in the rematch.
In the quarterfinal,
Aziawonou (who had converted the winning PK to beat Austria) scored for Togo, but Senegal also scored and the match ultimately ended 1-1. Yet another penalty shootout was required, but this time Togo weren't able to convert their chances and lost 4-2, bowing out of the World Cup after five straight draws, without having lost a match (and having reached the quarterfinals without winning a match either!).
